$120,000 salary after tax: citizen versus foreigner
Reviewed by Radif Partners
A typical expat package, compared
$120,000 a year is a common package for experienced professionals, many of them foreigners on Employment Passes, and it shows the citizen-foreigner difference clearly. The foreign resident, with no CPF, takes home $10,000 a month and pays $7,835 of income tax for YA 2027, keeping $112,165 a year. The citizen contributes $19,200 a year to CPF, takes home $8,400 a month, and pays $5,627 of tax thanks to the CPF relief, keeping $95,173 in cash plus $35,520 in CPF with the employer’s share. The foreigner’s extra cash, $16,992, is smaller than the citizen’s total CPF: in wealth terms the citizen is ahead, in spending power the foreigner is. The citizen’s marginal rate is 11.5 %, the foreigner’s 15 %, which makes voluntary reliefs worth more to the foreigner.
