$2,500 a month: take-home pay and the point where tax starts
Reviewed by Radif Partners
The salary where income tax begins
$2,500 a month is roughly where a Singapore employee starts to owe income tax. Twelve months give $30,000 of employment income. The earned income relief takes off $1,000 and the CPF relief $6,000, leaving $23,000 of chargeable income: $3,000 above the tax-free band, taxed at 2 %. The bill for YA 2027 is $60, about $5 a month, small enough that many people forget it until the notice arrives. The payslip itself shows only CPF: $500 from the employee, leaving $2,000 of take-home pay. A first-year PR on graduated rates keeps $2,375, because only 5 % is deducted, but pays a little more tax, $150, since the CPF relief is smaller. Anyone at this level who receives a bonus, even a small one, will see it taxed at 2 % rather than the 0 % of the first band.

Part-time or full-time
At $2,500 for a full-time week, the MOM hourly basic rate is $13.11. Employees who are not workmen and earn up to $2,600 are covered by Part IV of the Employment Act; above it they are not, so overtime and rest-day pay depend on the contract. At $2,500 a non-workman is still covered.

Questions people ask
How much tax do I pay on $2,500 a month in Singapore?
About $60 for the year if you are a citizen aged 30 with no other reliefs. Your chargeable income after the earned income relief and CPF relief is $23,000, and only the part above $20,000 is taxed, at 2 %. There is no monthly withholding: IRAS bills you the following year.
What is the take-home pay on $2,500 for a new PR?
$2,375 a month in the first year of PR status on the default graduated rates, since only 5 % of salary goes to CPF, against $2,000 for a citizen. In the second year the employee rate rises to 15 %, and from the third year to 20 %, like a citizen.
Am I entitled to overtime pay on $2,500?
Yes, if your contract has overtime and you are covered by Part IV of the Employment Act, which applies to non-workmen earning up to $2,600 and workmen up to $4,500. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly basic rate, $13.11 at this salary, so $19.67 an hour.
